New York City Transit Authority operates the public transportation in New York City as part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). It is the busiest transit system in the United States, making over 7 million trips daily. They operate the New York Subway, the Staten Island Railway and the New York City Bus.

New York City Transit Authority became a public benefit corporation in 1953. Prior to this time there were three separate systems in competition. The city operate street cars and buses at this time when it originally incorporated. They grew rapidly and now operate the subways, buses and trains. Today, the high ridership covers 67% of its operating costs.
