An IT (information technology) specialist may work in several different areas of technology, including computer repair, computer security, network support, sever administration and customer support. IT specialists can be found in a variety of work places, too. Schools, government offices, insurance companies and private businesses all employ IT specialists to keep computer systems and databases running smoothly.
Skill Set:
An IT specialist must have a great deal of knowledge of computers, operating systems, networks and computer servers. Critical thinking and problem solving skills are very important to people working in this field; IT specialist routinely troubleshoot and diagnose complex computer problems.
Education:
Most people working in the field have several types of certifications including A+ certification, C+ certification, Security + certification and Network + certification. Some may have additional training in specialized systems and many hold an associates degrees or higher level degree.
Career Path:
Some college is almost always necessary to find entry level IT work. Community colleges may offer a two year degree or basic IT certifications, though a B.A. in computer science or a related field is usually recommended. Internships are also very helpful for IT students for gaining additional work experience.
