What do you like about working at IBM?
One company that offers opportunities in literally hundreds of areas of the business. While I was primarily a software marketing exec, I was able to move to a sales role, a business partner development role, an event manager, both world wide and domestic. IBM truly is a company where you can be or do anything you want if you have the aptitude.
What don't you like about working at IBM?
While I understand as a shareholder the move from cash balance to an enhanced 401K plan, for younger employees (under 35) this is truly a great way to maximize and mobilize retirement benefits. However, for me and others who joined IBM, it was a penalty, and the reason many of my contemporaries are choosing early retirement.
What suggestions do you have for management?
More face time and less paperwork. Accounting for every minute of every day is time consuming and takes away from face time with customers OR requires one to break the work/life balance and complete INTERNAL documents and reports which drive no revenue.
Please give us a one liner to describe this review.
I was an IBMer for nearly 35 years. I maximized my pension accrual by retiring this year, but IBM was and is a great company to be a part of.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Realize that while you may be applying for A job, your career can take many forms, many of which are within your control. If you enjoy travel, there are many world-wide roles, based in the US, which provide the opportunity to visit cities everywhere on the globe. If you are the research type, who prefers working at a desk and developing and improving products, there are opportunities for growth in that space as well. It truly is 100 companies all under one IBM "blue" umbrella.
