The job of an HVAC technician is to install, maintain and repair heating and cooling systems. Many HVAC technicians specialize in installation or repair, but it is not uncommon for them to be required to do both. HVAC technicians are also often called upon to do home energy audits.
Skillsets: HVAC technicians will need to be familiar with a wide variety of heaters and air conditioning equipment, and they will also need to be able to work with air ducts, thermostats and coolant lines. This job also requires being able to troubleshoot heating and cooling issues and be able to identify poor insulation, duct leaks and drafts in homes.
Education: Most HVAC technicians attend vocational schools to be able to find work in this field. They can also go to HVAC certification classes and receive training from HVAC equipment manufacturers.
Career Path: People who want to work as HVAC technicians will need to understand a wide array of heating and cooling systems and types of equipment. Internships along with attending HVAC training schools are common ways of entering this industry.
