General Atomics Careers & Info

Current CEO: James Neal Blue

Status: Active

General Atomics (GA) is a manufacturer of products for use in the information services, energy, and nuclear fuel cell industries. It operates the largest private sector nuclear fusion program in the world. In the field of atomic powered technology, GA is an innovative leader. Among the company’s many achievements is the development of the first modular helium cooled nuclear reactor.

The aeronautics division manufactures unmanned surveillance aircraft, censors, Lynx radar systems, and aircraft launch and recovery systems. The MQ-1 Reaper and MQ-9 Predator UAVs were extensively used during the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. GA is also involved in information technology, uranium mining, medical diagnostic testing products, superconducting magnetic systems, and hazardous waste disposal systems.

Working at General Atomics affords employees the opportunity to participate in private and government defense projects. The US Department of Energy and US Department of Defense are major contracts. The main engineering and manufacturing laboratory is located in San Diego, California. Denver, Los Alamos, Oklahoma City, Tupelo, Ogden, and Washington D.C. have affiliated facilities. Internationally, GA has a presence in Germany, Russia, and Japan.

The scientists and engineers who founded the company are world-renowned. General Atomics careers are generally considered prestigious. It employs people from unrelated professions, such as attorneys and accountants, as well as researchers and technologists. There is a wide variety of positions, from Lean Six Sigma specialists to software developers. Due to the demand for technological growth, job security at GA is very good.

General Atomics benefits are exceptional for the industry. There is a waiting period before employees can access the program. To qualify, staff must work a minimum number of hours each week. Medical, dental, and vision plans offer extensive coverage for the individual and family. Pension plan and 401(k) options are available.

A generous leave policy allows employees to take advantage of paid personal time off, vacations, and holidays. In addition, tax reduction plans and life insurance provide income protection. The work schedule is flexible, offering employees the opportunity to work longer hours each day in exchange for a shorter workweek.

The GA culture is goal oriented. Most employees work very long hours, and the organization tries to offset this by providing an onsite recreation facility and membership in the Employee Recreation Association. The environment is challenging, as the company strongly promotes creative thinking in expanding technologies. The country club atmosphere affords a good opportunity for academic and social development.
