"I really love the potential (no pun intended) of working in electrical engineering. I like to be able to take my skills from work home and create my own devices to play with. I plan on customizing my house with homemade devices to integrate the whole house to my needs. The only downside so far is when looking for work, companies want an exact fit walking in the door. The expectation to know how to use their version of industry software, or to know multiple job roles to save money."

Electrical Engineer at Rockwell Collins
in Cedar Rapids, IA

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"It started with oh no, I think I made a mistake, and it ended that way."

What do you like about working at Rockwell Collins?

"The people I worked with were nice to your face, but would tell the resource manager that you haven't given them instructions/actions to protect themselves even though you just got done giving them the action list. In the end I liked nothing."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Prove to the interviewer that you're a top notch Electrical/Mechanical Engineer and that you have no soul. Stay away from this place."

What don't you like about working at Rockwell Collins?

"The facilities were old and worn out. The carpet was dirty, the cubicles were dirty, and the HVAC systems were constantly going down. The office spaces and labs were in major need of a face lift. I found that fault finding and blame shifting were used frequently by Program Managers and Resource Managers. If you didn't cover your tail with an email it was a guarantee it would be taken advantage of. Performance reviews were unfair and good reviews were given to the Resource Manager's favorites. The Select could have company policy and rules bent for them by HR and management, but those rules and policies are strictly enforced when it benefits Uncle Rocky."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Become trustworthy, supportive, and honest, oh that's right, you wouldn't be managers at Rockwell Collins if you had those three character qualities."

Electrical Engineer at Weyerhaeuser
in Vancouver, WA

What do you like about working at Weyerhaeuser?

"The professional attitude of the people and the management made it enjoyable to work through the details of the project."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"This operation uses 2 or 3 different sets of standards. It is not easy to understand which of the documents apply to this project."

What don't you like about working at Weyerhaeuser?

"The lack of input from my manager on current and planned changes caused me to have to rework portions of the package several times. I felt like I was too insulated from the scope changes that were made in the middle of the design process. They are using AutoCAD as a drawing system, but not taking advantage of the functions that are built in to AutCAD to coordinate the disciplines. Questions about the design standards were often responded to with That is a good question. not a clear answer that I could use."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I would suggest they embrace the power of the AutoCAD system to improve the quality of the stored information for each and every plant that they modify. That way one would not have to search through old drawings to find out if any information about the location or installation details could be found. I also think that they could do a better job of controlling changes to the scope of work. Several changes never made it through the release process but were part of the final design."
