A desktop support technician provides technical support to clients, which includes troubleshooting computer hardware and software problems. A typical day for a desktop support technician involves assisting clients by applying problem solving tactics to repair computer hardware and software issues.


Skillset: Desktop support technicians must demonstrate strong communication and troubleshooting abilities. They must use critical thinking skills to solve problems on computer systems or networks. They may also be required to teach users how to properly use their computer system and software.


Education: The minimum requirement for a desktop support technician is a high school diploma or GED. A degree in computer science, information technology, information systems, or a related field is more desirable. Industry certifications such as CompTIA’s A+ and Network+ are also highly regarded.


Career Path: Desktop support technicians must have excellent computer hardware and software troubleshooting abilities. Consider pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field to increase desirability and promotional opportunities. Computer related certifications will add relevant qualifications and build up a resume. Finding an internship and starting a freelance project are also excellent ways to gain experience.
