"Terribly disappointing company to work for."

Intel Review by Intel Employee in Lehi, UT on

What do you like about working at Intel?

Except for the most advanced tools, there is nothing in this company to work for.

What don't you like about working at Intel?

Nothing.. The management is not at all good. They promise a lot when they hire you, but they do not deliver a single thing. They trap you into a 2 year contract and tie you up so that you use any previous knowledge you have gained in life or in education. The shift engineer jobs they have are done by least experienced and low educated people in other industries. They do not care anything other than the work being done. They impose extraneous hours on you and you wont get any recognition or promotions unless you put in 65 to 70 hours a week.. As one intelligent man has put it, a dumb manager and a dumb employee is equal to production, that is exactly what it is. I have left that company due to the vulgar politics and dirty attitudes the managers carry. I have seen many talented people leave that place. Least paying company and they always boast they are better in market, but that is totally B.S.... When I left the company, the HR asked me what my experience was. I could feel clearly that they did not even care what I was telling and they were just asking probably because it is some law. They did not even consider that I was leaving because I was badly hurt. They pay you salary and they buy your life..

What suggestions do you have for management?

They have to improve their management skills and be truthful. Earn the trust of employees and not act like GODS in the company. They are fellow employees working to get a good product out of the door. They should act in the same way. Needless to say, it will fall on deaf ears..

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Do not interview with them unless you have no other life other than job or decide to get a divorce from your wife.

"Intel can be a great place to work, but it can also be grueling at times, with expectations such that you should be constantly stretching yourself to grow in an extremely competitive, meritocratic environment."

Intel Review by Senior Engineering Manager in Portland, OR on

3.90

What do you like about working at Intel?

The hard work can pay handsomely in this meritocratic environment - the hardest workers are rewarded well.

What don't you like about working at Intel?

Once you hit the threshold of being considered a major contributor, you'll forever be putting in 60+ hour weeks.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Correctly size teams and organizations - stop shipping jobs overseas just to lower the bottom line costs. It's not an effective way to make genuine progress. Managers are constantly chasing quality issues and lack of good progress with teams that are split across continents and cultures. It's definitely herding cats...

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Be sure you're ready for high expectations about your output quality and ability to contribute broadly. Your sphere of influence is expected to grow every year, and you need to be an expert at influencing people and constantly exceeding the goals laid out for you. This is not an environment for everyone - overachievers only need apply.

"It dependends what group you wind up working for. Management is very marginal, many constrains as how you do your work. leaves you drained and just not motivated to come in to work."

Intel Review by Contract Mask Designer on

What do you like about working at Intel?

Is a job and you get paid.

What don't you like about working at Intel?

The management style. For layout they count devices. The layout depts are sweat shops.

What suggestions do you have for management?

To stop the device count system. To let people do their jobs and be fair. For example if I inherit a design that contains a big block alrealdy done, my device count for that week is gooing to be high but the following week it is a costum layout block with analog characteristics, that means my device count will go down and you basically get punished in your weekly meetings. Each layout block it unique an d the ammount of time is different for each design. The layout designer should be left alone to perform his or her job and not to constantly be harrased as how many devices did you put down on a given week.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Ask at the interview what is the the weekly expectation and if this layout high pressure still exists.

"Great place to be challenged and expand skills."

Intel Review by Sr. Circuit Designer in Austin, TX on

4.00

What do you like about working at Intel?

Being exposed to leading edge technology and design techniques in the industry. Receiving a personal laptop to telecommute during non 9am - 5pm hours to monitor progress of long simulations. A multi-site company, the teleconferencing support and meeting manager software was an excellent tool to organize meetings with other employees in different states and countries.

What don't you like about working at Intel?

Getting licenses for some CAD tools proved to be challenging at times as well as access to computers with large amounts of memory for extensive and detailed full chip simulations.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Compared to Motorola(Freescale), Intel at Austin was not as "family" friendly. Not allowed to arrange special telecommuting hours for family illness, ect.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Study, study, study, study. Expect to be grilled by 6 - 8 engineers that arrive with pages of technical questions and problems to solve on the spot. Know everything that you state on your resume plus more.

"Intel was an excellent company, but I didn't feel that software engr. was considered important."

Intel Review by Design Engineer in Hillsboro, OR on

3.30

What do you like about working at Intel?

Benefits were outstanding. My initial projects at Intel were incredible, and I grew tremendously as an engineer in the first 3 years.

What don't you like about working at Intel?

Software was considered second fiddle. Almost all of my projects were cancelled, even though in a few cases we had built very profitable products. Constantly seeing friends and teammates fired due to "reorg" becomes tiring and demoralizing.

What suggestions do you have for management?

More focus required on a consistent organization for software development for the whole company. Release "dead" software projects - reuse is good, but pick software and/or software pieces which will promote success, as opposed to creating undue burden.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

If you are a software engineer, go in eyes wide open. As long as you are don't mind being a mercenary, you'll be fine. Don't expect sucess to be a factor in long term growth of your team... sad, but a reality in many groups at Intel.

"Overall Bliss: Below Average"

Intel Review by Intel Employee in Chandler, AZ on

1.60

What do you like about working at Intel?

It was mildly interesting, testing preproduction chips for problems before customers see them. And many tech minded people.

What don't you like about working at Intel?

Even though I had this job to do it seemed that other departments didn't really want to know that I found problems with the chips they designed. Also the fact that my job title (grade 8) was a company secret made it hard to identify my peers and compare my work against theirs. A college who I thought outranked me turned out to be one grade below me. Also the churn of my bosses didn't help. Once my hiring manager was gone, nobody had any investment in my success.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Make it more clear who my peers actually are, and get rid of the sillyness of secret job titles. And keep the hiring manager paired with teh new hire longer than 3 months.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Seems this place will hire people and see if they can survive the abuse the first year. I'd just rent an apartment so you don't get stuck unloading a condo if you do get canned.

"I was very happy at Intel. Unfortunately, it was a one year contract position. Then there was a hiring freeze."

Intel Review by Journeyman contractor on

4.30

What do you like about working at Intel?

I was most pleased with the respect given to the employees and the importance of the logistic support persons role in the companies success. I was also happy with the amount of on the job training available for advancement.

What don't you like about working at Intel?

The only negative about working at Intel was the hiring freeze that was enforced after my one year contract was complete. I would have liked to become a permanant employee with advancement opportunities.

What suggestions do you have for management?

The management was very supportive. I would suggest working with individuals in training for advancement to other openings within the company and molding them to Intel's philosophy.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

It is very important to Intel that you are an honest trustworthy person due to the nature of the company.

"You will learn how to compete on a global scale."

Intel Review by Self-Sustaining Technician in Beaverton, OR on

3.00

What do you like about working at Intel?

the diversity of the people was amazing. Every nationality and socioeconomic level was there.

What don't you like about working at Intel?

The ranking and rating with forced distribution was unfair to older higher compensated workers.

What suggestions do you have for management?

They should develop a backbone and show some personal ethics when told to do the dirty deeds necessary to keep their jobs.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

It is a global corporation with all of the global assets available. Some of these assets include high levels of automation with access to well educated cheap labor. This is not a place you will retire from because Intel has the ability to cut your throat if you slow down. Understand that it is nothing personal, it is just protecting the stakeholders. I did learn a great deal about how global corporations operate and where our country is headed.

"Everyone should work at Intel at some point, but should not limit their horizons by it"

Intel Review by Software Engineer in Hillsboro, OR on

3.50

What do you like about working at Intel?

Superb technology, highly intelligent co-workers, extensive R&D, sensible projects

What don't you like about working at Intel?

Slight over-fondness for meetings, rigid career paths and an unusually high percentage of co-workers with control issues.

What suggestions do you have for management?

The biggest issues I have seen in my two times at Intel have been a high level of insecurity and mistrust between employees of different groups. It is doubtful this is efficient and may be leading to unnecessary burn-out. It is unclear if this can be really addressed in any corporate giant, least of all in one that is very high-paced and demanding, especially as the best in the field tend to be emotionally energetic. It cannot hurt to examine how best to channel the extra energy into progress, though.

"Intel is a great company and a great place to work."

Intel Review by Training Specialist in Portland, OR on

3.80

What do you like about working at Intel?

Opportunities for moving into new responsibilities and challenging work projects.

What don't you like about working at Intel?

Ranking and Rating: During the year, you were supposed to be the supreme team player, but at annual RnR, you had to prove what you alone had done for the company. Difficult to claim credit when it had always been shared as a team!

What suggestions do you have for management?

Be flexible as you can with employees. Most of us were willing to work very hard and put in long hours, but sometimes needed flexibility, like working remotely, or taking a day off after working all weekend.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Be open and willing to adapt to an environment that may be very different from what you were used to in past work experiences.
