The Chicago Housing Authority is a public service agency that provides low-income families in the city of Chicago, Illinois with affordable housing options. The Authority administers housing programs under the direction from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and receives funding directly from the annual federal budget. The largest program that the Authority administers is the Housing Choice Voucher program, more commonly known as Section 8. This program allows for individuals and families to take advantage of subsidized housing that is based on thirty percent of their annual income.

Founded in 1938, the Chicago Housing Authority provides housing for more than 50,000 families and maintains 11,500 units of public housing within the City of Chicago. They Authority is under direct supervision of a board of directors of ten individuals that are appointed by the mayor of Chicago.
