Adjunct Lecturer at Southern Methodist University
in Dallas, TX

"Being an Adjunct Lecturer is a better experience than being a Teaching Assistant because you have more responsibilities and control of your course work. You have more interaction with students and you have more incentives to prepare your class. Even though I have taken Calculus classes, I have learned much more than when I am taking a class. The class size for SMU is relatively small and the burden is bearable. The only down side is that the income is not significant."

What do you like about working at University of New Mexico?

"I like teaching as an activity, so that is what I liked."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you are thinking of working there as a part-time lecturer you are better off shooting yourself in the foot directly rather than doing it metaphorically."

What don't you like about working at University of New Mexico?

"No supervision, no support; really nothing. I was just told to go teach and got nothing else. Not even evaluated by faculty or students!"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"In my work there I basically had no supervision, no support, really just nothing. I was given a textbook to teach out of and told to go to some room across campus to teach. No other interaction with people above me. (So this question is hard to answer well!) I did not even have an office to work in! If I ran it, I'd make sure the instructors were supervised, seek out to support making them part of the community, and find some space for them to work in!!!"
