An electrician works with electrical wiring in machines, buildings and other items. They may repair, maintain or install electrical devices. Many electricians specialize by working in particular industries. Industries may include television, movies, airplanes, ships and other specialties. In addition they may work for government or private utility companies.
Skill Set: Electricians may work in very hot or cold weather conditions. They must learn and follow safety protocols to prevent injury from dangerous electrical currents. An electrician must be physically strong enough to climb ladders or lift equipment. An electrician will use various power and hand tools to install electrical wiring and devices.
Education: An electrician should attain a high school diploma. Many electricians attend trade schools or community colleges. While in school they will study math, science and other courses. Most geographic locations require an electrician to begin as an apprentice. As an apprentice they will learn for several years from master and journeyman electricians.
Career Path: An apprentice electrician will continue to study so that they can receive an adequate score on a licensing exam. With experience, training and licensing they can progress to the classification of master or journeyman electrician. Electricians often join trade organizations or unions.
