Overview
Texas State University–San Marcos, commonly just called Texas State, is the fifth-larges university in the state. Established in 1899 as Southwest Texas State Normal School, 303 entered the school in 1903 with an emphasis on educating teachers. With several changes in scope and attendance requirements over the years, the most recent name change, to Texas State University–San Marcos, occurred in 2003.
Texas State has a main campus on 457 acres. Located in the city of San Marcos, it is midway between Austin and San Antonio. The school has more than 5,000 additional acres that include farm and ranch land, commercial, recreational, and residential areas. Texas State offers degrees in nearly 100 bachelor and master programs as well as 12 doctoral programs. The most famous alumnus of the university is US President Lyndon B. Johnson.
