Overview TECO Energy is an energy company headquartered in Tampa, Florida. Its main subsidiary is the Tampa Electric Company, which provides electricity to 677,000 commercial and residential customers. TECO also owns Peoples Gas System, a natural gas distributor in Florida, and TECO Coal, which operates coalmines in Virginia and Kentucky.

The Tampa Electric Company was founded in 1899, an outgrowth of the Consumers Electric Light and Street Railway Company, a company formed in 1892 by Peter O. Knight and other entrepreneurs to provide trolley service in Tampa. In 1974, the company purchased Gatliff Coal Company in Kentucky to provide fuel for its Florida power plants. TECO Energy was formed as a holding company in 1981. During the 1990s, the company expanded into the production of natural gas.
