Marie Callender formed the roots of the restaurant chain when she began a home-based bakery business in the 1940s. In 1964, Marie's son, Don, opened the first Marie Callender's pie and coffee shop. The company combined with Perkins Restaurant and Bakery in 2006. The merged company filed for bankruptcy in 2011 and several Marie Callender's restaurants were closed. It emerged from bankruptcy in late 2011.
