377 Store Managers from Dollar General submitted salaries.
Current CEO: Todd Vasos Status: Active
Dollar General Corporation began under the name J.L. Turner & Son, Inc. in 1939. Its founding father, Carl Turner, started this small chain of general stores in Scottsville, Kentucky. In 1968, the company changed its name to Dollar General Corporation, carrying out a unique concept that nothing in the store would cost more than one dollar. Consumers loved the idea, and sales skyrocketed over $40 million. Acquiring Eagle Family Discount Stores and an additional 280 stores belonging to Interco, Inc., Dollar General Corporation grew to nationwide status. Although the word “dollar” remains in the company name, items are no longer priced under the one dollar mark.
Retail items range from groceries to hardware, cleaning supplies to clothing. Usually serving smaller communities and neighborhoods, Dollar General acts as a small-scale Wal-Mart. Most stores were originally placed in strip malls and shopping centers, but recent construction under the Dollar general name has been in stand-alone stores. These miniature super-stores attract the frugal shopper looking for low-cost merchandise, as well as the community shopper seeking out a more intimate experience over big discount warehouse-style stores.
The company’s sales now exceed $11 billion, and its rapid expansion across the nation is yet another tribute to its success. Dollar General now operates over 9,000 locations across the United States and employs almost ten thousand people. Dollar General careers can be found in any of the many stores, as well as the corporate headquarters and distribution centers.
With a mission of "serving others," Dollar General culture is both diverse and friendly. The company strives to serve its customers, but also its employees and its shareholders, recognizing that all three groups contribute to the success of the corporation. Employee ideas and feedback are continually sought after in an effort to improve customer service and employee work environments. Working at Dollar General means being a team player, striving for excellence and exhibiting a spirit of serving others.
Because this company puts such an emphasis on employee integrity and values, military personnel, both active and veteran, are encouraged to apply. The discipline and accountability taught by the military extend perfectly into the civilian career at Dollar General. To further attract and also reward quality employees, DG benefits are offered to all full-time regular employees. These include:
• Retirement savings plans (401K) • Health benefits packages containing medical, vision, dental and prescription coverage • Flexible spending accounts • Disability and life insurance benefits • Accidental death and dismemberment policies • Business travel accident insurance • Wellness programs • Competitive base pay • Bonus opportunities for store managers • Paid vacation and holidays
Regional Director is the highest paying job at Dollar General at $123,000 annually.
