Dave Thomas founded Wendy’s on November 15, 1969, in Columbus, Ohio, and named it after his fourth child, Melinda Lou “Wendy” Thomas. On January 29, 2006, the international fast food chain restaurant moved its headquarters to Dublin, Ohio. By March 2010, Wendy’s, with 6,650 locations was third of the three largest hamburger fast food chains, after McDonald’s 31,000 locations and Burger King’s 12,000 locations. Most of Wendy’s restaurants are franchised in North America and are well known for their hamburgers, chicken sandwiches and the Frosty, a thick malt shake. The square patty, made with fresh ground beef, is Wendy’s signature item.

In 1971, Wendy’s made corporate history by beginning the first drive-thru window. History was made again in 1979 when Wendy’s added the first salad bar. When 1986 brought a slowdown in the fast-food chains, Wendy’s brought theirs into accord with the standards and goals of the parent company, thereby making its franchises more competitive with other fast-food companies.
