Virginia State University is a public university located in Ettrick, Virginia. It was founded in 1882 as a school for African-Americans. The founder was William Mahone, a former Confederate Army general who was a strong proponent of creating public schools to educate freed blacks. After desegregation, the university began accepting students from all racial backgrounds, but it still remains a very popular school among African-Americans.
