The Vice President of Marketing is the Executive-level head of company's marketing operations. He or she is responsible for developing and executing a communications strategy in a way that encourages growth and reinforces a company’s brand identity. The VP of Marketing often reports directly to the CEO and CFO of a company and works with them to develop and execute clear, attainable goals.
Skillset: A good Vice President is comfortable in a senior management role where strategies are often developed on a regional, national or global level. Negotiation and communication skills are necessary, as are good leadership qualities and a long history of management experience.
Education: Almost all Vice Presidents of Marketing have some form of applicable University Degree and many have MBAs. Vice Presidents operate at a level where advanced education in business is often necessary, though a long track record of success and experience can often be comparable.
Career Path: While high-level degrees are often necessary in order to hold a Vice Presidential position, applicable real-world experience is a must. Many VPs of Marketing start off in mid-level administrative roles and work their way up while attending school. One should obtain a bachelor’s degree in Business or Marketing and plan on getting an MBA by the time you reach middle-management.
