What do you like about working at United States Steel?

"Blue Cross Blue Shield = Medical coverageNot sure where the other comments from other reviews are coming from, because they were pretty good. Well most of the comments came from PA which is where corporate is located, it's not uncommon that corporate has no clue how the other locations are operating or what employees at other locations are experiencing."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you have served your time for your crime this is a good place to get back on your feet. You will not be able to comsume any illlegal substances be cause they spent lots of money on drug testing, that is the only money they will invest on you. You interview for labor it's a breeze, will just need some hair on your head. They will tell you lots of lies in the interview so know you get nothing be long hours and great insurance. You will also see lots of unfair treatment among the races, yes it still exist. If you want a dead end job this is the place to be. Good luck."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I would promote the 1 person who has made the move from manager to leader, the workers really appreciate him, he has displayed a real concern for the workers. I would get rid of some of the original mgrs because they are clueless. For this to be a 100+ year old company, they are still stuck in that time 100+ years ago, maybe 1901. The company has not made a move from having managers to having leaders. This company had allowed us to work with zero training. Only if their customer knew what was going on there with their product, lots of mistake. the company should just reciut us from the jail because they locked us out of they building...yet they use open door policy. they have allowed a union to start there opts mgr of place where I worked was so busy tring to screw the workers contract is a joke. plant opts mgr has not learned his greatest assest would be the people and customers. Mr. CEO did you even care about your houston employees. Again, not sure why such great reviews...most were from managers. Company had great image for always hiring yet there is a revoving door becasuse people always leaving, espeically if their crime not so bad."

"Don't work for US Steel."

What do you like about working at United States Steel?

"There are alot of good people working there. Pay/Benefits are decent."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Do not work here unless you are desperate for a job."

What don't you like about working at United States Steel?

"This company is running on it's reputation from 50 years ago but it's no longer that same company and nor are the pay or benefits.Cons Their management philosphy is 50 years old. Most managers line of thinking is to do things the US Steel way and often times it's a completely outdated management practice or a technologically dated practice.Human Resources is worthless. Plan on seeing them the first few days of employment and never again.Upper management is long on promises to individuals for the future and short on keeping them. Generally people who are promoted are either one of the chosen few or are related to someone in upper management (nepotism is encouraged and rampant. The new ERP system which they've been working on for many years and have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on has many shortcomings and is hampering the commercial side of their business.Advice to Senior Management Update management philisophy, mentality and culture to the 21st century. Treat your employee's like professionals. Lie less often, live up to what you promise more often."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Keep your promises to employees, treat them like professionals, promot from within and not by nepotism."

"I've worked for USS-POSCO Industries for 7 years. In that time, UPI has provided me many opportunities to grow personal skills in leadership and career skills through sideways movement within the company to completely new positions. This has allowed me to grow as an individual to acquire new skills and experiences. I would recommend UPI for someone early in their career."

"Since I have been with US Steel, in the offshore operation, we've made great improvements for our threading operation, like using better tools and carbide to cut the usage of carbide. I write most of the programs for the production of premium threads. I train the operators for the processes and work with them out on the floor. Us steel has the best safety procedures in place. I've work on all kinds of machines from conventional to cnc's, mills, lathes, grinders, water jet, and EDM's."

"In my current position, I am nothing more than a glorified paper pusher, who has no real authority to make decisions, since upper management micro manages and makes all decisions without being down on the front line."
