Working at University of Massachusetts in Worcester, MA: 13 Employee Reviews

Postdoctoral Associate

"Good place!"

What don't you like about working at University of Massachusetts?

"Extreme cold."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Nothing major - International office was great."

Postdoctoral Scientist

"Great place to work!"

What do you like about working at University of Massachusetts?

"It is a very collegial place to do science--most people were open and willing to help others with whatever they could. The facilities and equipment are generally very good, as are a lot of the administration stuff. For a postdoc, the benefits were outstanding- state retirement, matching 401k, and really affordable good health insurance (employer pays 2/3)--a lot of places do not offer postdocs nearly the benefits UMass Med School does."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"The quality of your life while working at UMass Med School depends largely on the investigator you plan to work with. If a PI you're interested in will not give you a NIH standard salary (for 0-4 yrs postdoc anyways) look at another lab. Worcester and MA in general are expensive places to live."

What don't you like about working at University of Massachusetts?

"The only major negative was a lack of career support by the university. There is no 'office' postdocs can go to get help/guidance/advice on how to get to the next step in their careers. However, this was being addressed at the time I was leaving (2008). Minor quibbles are that all PI's do not pay the same rate (something to watch for), and the minimum postdoc salary is low (below NIH guidelines last I heard)."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Improve min salaries to NIH scale or better, Postdoc career office."

"Umass has been good to me overall over the years. Their recent struggles have forced me to look for more work aggressively, but doesn't change the fact that they are still a decent company to work for."

"The university recently took on a new CIO and he has worked hard to change the culture. Unfortunately his big ideas have misfired several times along the way and instead of energizing the work force and removing barriers he's created an atmosphere of fear that fosters cronyism. The best employees have recognized this and found new opportunities which leaves mostly sycophants and incompetents. Some good people, but an unfortunate turn."

"Worked there for 3-plus and was laid-off due to a "workforce re-design" that was not based on my performance. It was very disappointing, and I felt totally not valued at all."
