"The College campus an surrounding area give us a unique opportunity. We work in a very urban area and have jurisdiction beyond the boundaries of the University into high crime areas."

What don't you like about working at University of Maryland?

"Although we have 70+ officers, many are in administrative positions. Some people work patrol for their entire career. You can also become a detective but there are few other enforcement positions. We also have a large amount of mandatory overtime including all football and many basketball games. Some people work six days a week in the fall. If you like overtime, there is nearly an unlimited amount."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"They need to change their style. The current Chief has been around a long time and is getting ready to retire. Hopefully a new Chief will change things around. The administration tends to concentrate on one problem at a time, whichever the University administration is making a big deal about. One week we will be making sure people aren't stealing cars and the next we won't care about it at all. We will just make sure people don't fight at the college bars."
