3I worked for the UIUC Office of Grants and Contracts for nine years. Generally, I found the work fascinating and learned a great deal about federal, state and private awards. I gained new and/or improved skills through in-house training, seminars, webinars and online classes. The management style of the office is extremely hierarchical. If not on the management team, there's very little opportunity to contribute to conversations and decisions affecting the office and the work done.
4The University of Illinois provides great opportunities for those willing to learn and provides a good work life balance. The compensation is below the market but the benefits are hard to beat.
3.1College research is always fun and interesting, provided you get the right mentor. But college students don't get paid very well. I just decided to opt out of payment and just got grades instead. It was better than what they were willing to pay me.
