"I loved that it was a community hospital. Not only did you have the hospital setting in a nice neighborhood, but they had all of the doctors and clinics in the same area. It made for a nice working atmosphere. The physicians were top notch."

"Pay VERY close attention when you interview. Talk to others who report to your proposed manager. If you are in one of the sad departments, you will know as soon as you walk in the door."

"It is a systemically dysfunctional organization - it may have changed since I left, but the management structure consisted of people who'd been there, some for more than 40 years. Much damage was done and it was impossible to get any real work done. Staff felt threatened in many departments. It was a most uncomfortable place to work."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"The Chancellor was in the process of helping some of her 40+ year managers find their way into retirement, but much more of this needs to happen and then make some pretty dramatic changes to undo the damage that's occurred over many years. The level of trust in most departments is extremely low based on inconsistent and sometimes bizarre management behavior."

"lack of career ladder for postdocs and the salary range of UCSD posdocs are below the minimum average set up by NIH."

"No accountability of managers, HR did NOT back the employee's, they protected the Faculty. No one looked out for post-docs, the HR department was not helpful."

"Remember that the post-docs and graduate students are what drives the center, they deserve to be taken care of."
