"At Target and especially in the Starbucks Kiosk at a mall it's very hard to be recognized and appreciated for what you do and what you can bring to the table. It also seems like some management give you hours according to how well/not well you up-sell Red Cards rather than 'vibing' with the customer. However the good part about working there is that there are really kind, genuine and hardworking team members who will give you their shirt off their back even if they've only met you once."

Team Member at Plum Market
in Bloomfield Hills, MI

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"Disrespectful owners & managers. No breaks. No holiday pay."

What do you like about working at Plum Market?

"My coworkers, the people I work with on a day to day basis, are mostly fantastic. Also, the product that we sell is generally of good quality (before it sits under heat lamps for 8-10 hours)."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Don't let the managers talk you into a lower wage, or different job than you are willing to accept. They will tell you that they will re-evaluate the situation, but they won't. If the job and wage they offer you at the interview don't work for you, then walk away. NOTHING ever changes for the better in this place."

What don't you like about working at Plum Market?

"I have worked for this company for slightly less than a year. In that time, I have seen A LOT of people start working in the store and leave. This company has constant problems with turnover. Maybe they wonder why, but they aren't taking any steps to correct the situation. Low wages and high expectations of employees lead most people to conclude that working at Plum simply isn't worth it.Our customers in the store can be rude, sometimes downright mean. Employees get no support from management whatsoever. The owners often come through the store, but almost never say anything to, or acknowledge their hourly employees (again, I've never worked for a family-owned business where this happened). I can't believe that this company has had any success operating this way. I was hired in at a low wage ($8.50/hour. Works out to about $17,000/year) and I remain at that low wage after working there almost a year. Plum Market is open 364 days a year (closed on Christmas Day only) and employees are expected to work holidays with NO INCENTIVE. I repeat, there is no time-and-a-half paid for holidays; there is no bonus paid for holidays worked. Additionally, in my department, there is very little effort made to ensure that employees can take breaks. I almost never get a 15 minute break and I have NEVER in my 10 months working at this store taken a 30 minute lunch break. It is simply impossible logistically. They schedule the bare minimum of staff and because I work behind a counter that has to be staffed, there has to be someone available to cover any breaks. I do my best every day that I work, but I wish so much ill upon the owners of this company. I hope that the money they make with this company brings them nothing but sorrow and pain."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Learn how to have some respect for the people who are the face of your company. Your hourly employees are the people who make your store profitable. You would be broke without them. Your contempt for the people who earn the money that sends you to Cabo five times a year makes me sick. The owners should be ashamed of themselves. They disgust me. If you want to keep good people working for you, you need to take care of the people who work hard. Your stinginess, callousness and lack of understanding of your own operation makes working at Plum Market like stepping into a Kafka short story. Every day when I come to work, I wonder what I will be walking into. I am a great worker and the owners and managers have inspired zero loyalty in me. I am staying in this job until the fall so I can do some traveling this summer, but I will be looking for a new job come this fall."

"I was a cashier at McDonald's and had a lot of fun working with my team and making new friends."

What do you like about working at McDonald's?

"What I liked most about working for McDonalds was the fast-paced environment. It really took me for a ride and kept me busy at all times."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"The only tips I can provide are to smile and be yourself. They don't expect a lot from you, but they need to know that you are serious and aren't going to be a flake."

What don't you like about working at McDonald's?

"What I didn't like about working for McDonald's was the lack of teamwork at times. For such a fast-paced workplace, teamwork is key to not falling behind."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I would suggest that the management be a little more assertive with their teams. Some co-workers think it's all fun and games because they work in fast food, but there has to be structure, or all will fail."

Team Member at Firehouse Subs
in Garland, TX

What do you like about working at Firehouse Subs?

"I love the managers. They are friendly, upbeat and provide excellent training. I get feedback on the smallest things. I've gotten thanked for cleaning the chair legs correctly even though it's the most tedious job in the world. I got kudos for making some changes to the line behind the counter to make things more efficient, and a great job! for keeping up the pace on a busy day. The team members work together as a team and now that I've gotten to know everyone better it feels almost like a little family. I only get paid minimum wage, but in all honesty I will be a little sad to leave this job to get a salaried job that can support me."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"As long as you are upbeat and smile and show that you truly have an interest in customer service you should fit right in, and you will like working here."

What don't you like about working at Firehouse Subs?

"I honestly can't think of anything. Only certain people who don't follow the rules, but they usually get fired."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Keep it up!"
