The company began as “The Aircraft Research Laboratory”, which specialized in making various types of airplanes, starting in 1915 and becoming the main aircraft manufacturer for Japan's military in World War II. Fuji Heavy Industries underwent a reorganization in the 1950s and began manufacturing cars, the first one being the Subaru 1500, also called the P-1 after its development project name.

Regional distribution centers and other facilities were soon opened around the nation. The company made its entry in the Canadian market in 1976 with the creation of Subaru Canada, Inc.
