"My most relevant work experience has been for the State of Alaska’s Department of Transportation. I worked in the construction department as an Engineering Technician Intern over the summers of 2018 and 2019. During those summers I worked on a road reconstruction project on the Dalton highway just south of Deadhorse Alaska, and on the Elliot Highway in Fairbanks Alaska. In this role, I was directly involved with the project documentation and management phase of the project. In this position, my responsibilities included but were not limited to; documenting and directing construction building activities, daily use of project specifications, drawings and plans to relate work duties to labor and contractors, and interpersonal interaction with contractors and laborers daily for testing constructed features. My co-workers that I worked in this position were all polite and respectable and made it an enjoyable place to work even when some work was very tedious. Summer construction in Alaska required long work weeks, so in this position, my average work was a 7/12's schedule. This means 7 days a week 12 hours a day. This was good for making good money, but your life becomes work. Overall I enjoyed my time working in the construction department for the State of Alaska."

"Public services is definitely different from the private sector. The level of political posturing (as in people just trying to do enough to retire) is staggering. After this experience is done, I will never take another position in public service, if I can help it."

"I've worked with the state for 6 years now and if you start at a clerical level it is incredibly hard to get out of the job classification into the technical or paraprofessional jobs. The state's system for determining if you qualify is antiquated and your job class weighs more heavily for moving up than your experience, skills, or knowledge.They are moving to a jail cell size office setup and the tech we are given is 3+ years out of date.The upside is the people."
