As of the close of the 2012 Halloween season, the company operated over 1000 locations in 49 states and Canada. The stores are generally located in high-traffic strip malls.

Spirit Halloween opens their locations around Labor Day weekend each year and closes for the season in early November. The company is known for their wide selection of costumes for adults and children as well as their decorations and party goods. A majority of the items carried in stores are exclusive to Spirit Halloween.
