A software test engineer measures the quality of software applications and fixes any errors and glitches that are found during the creation and testing process. On a typical day, a software test engineer will study an application and create a testing plan based on the initial design scope of a project. When the application is completed they will test it for errors, documenting and fixing any problems they may find.
Skillset: Software test engineers must have deep knowledge of computer programming, as well as strong analytical and problem solving abilities. They must have excellent communication skills and work well in a team oriented environment. Additionally, they must have great management and customer service skills.
Education: Employers require that software test engineers have a bachelor’s degree in a computer programming related field or they must have a strong background in the computer programming industry. Industry certifications are also highly desirable.
Career Path: A successful software test engineer will demonstrate superior knowledge in computer programming and strong critical thinking and problem solving abilities. Pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science and consider a master’s degree to increase desirability. Build up a portfolio and resume through internships and freelance projects.
