Equity Research Analyst

"The SMPP (Student Managed Portfolio Project) is a great Senior Project that the Orfalea College of Business has to offer. It is ran by 24 students that act as equity research analysts for finding high dividend achiever company's that are put into a portfolio. The job requires a considerable amount of time, but is very enjoyable because we get to follow the market so closely and with real money! I highly recommend students who are interested in an analyst type project that want to work on their excel skills as well as communication skills working with a large team, to consider this position."

Lead Analysis Engineer

"I worked at Cal Poly for almost 2 years as the lead finite element analysis engineer and enjoyed my position there a lot. My supervisor referred his students to me when they needed help and looked to me for advice when he was having troubles with the program ABAQUS.The responsibility and knowledge I obtained from this job greatly improved my technical skills and my value as a future employee."

"Fantastic opportunity. I was absolutely thrilled to grade since it furthered my knowledge of what I was grading and also helped me to understand the common mistakes people make. Also, speaking to my professor to help them understand what knowledge/concepts/topics students weren't grasping greatly helped them to teach the material at a more precise level. Overall it was a win-win-win situation, a win for me, the professors I graded for, and a win for the students whose work I graded."

IT Consultant

"IT at Cal Poly is a mess and very political."

What do you like about working at Cal Poly SLO?

"Some of the people are awesome to work with, the variety of the work is."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"It'll be tough being an insider, especially these days Cal Poly hires almost everyone internally, this helps them avoid laying people off more than anything (bad budget and all)."

What don't you like about working at Cal Poly SLO?

"The politics, academics rule even if they have no clue what they are doing or talking about. IT works very dysfunctionally, not very well integrated, communication is poor, getting stuff done requires you know the right people if you want it done in a timely manor."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Allow people more control over what it is that they do. Give me chances to move up in the world, give people more chances to get to know each other, encourage the use of more campus services by cutting their costs, encourage people within ITS to communicate more, encourage ITS to not look down upon IT people not within ITS. Stop nickle and diming for every little thing, network ports shouldn't cost $150 per port to heat up especially when all you have to do is patch them. The list goes on and on."
