"I've been a substitute teacher for Simi Valley Unified School District since 2010. I love working with the kids, but I find the employer to be dishonest. They haven't given subs a raise in over 20 years. When you call the office with a problem they tell you you don't have a contract and you're free to work elsewhere. Every year they hire a lot of subs, as most people quit. If there is a problem at a school site with a disturbed child, or better yet an administrator who is off her meds, they will never care about your side. In fact they never tell subs of problems. They just don't let you work at that site again. Also, they will have you cover for an employee with the promise of 21 days or more of employment (which pays $220/day) but will have you work only 20 days for $100/day. In short, as the teacher's union doesn't cover you at all, don't expect any assistance with violations of employment law."
