Manufacturing engineers help design new machinery and processes that will make manufacturing companies more efficient and increase quality standards. These engineers may work for small, privately owned manufacturing plants or large, international corporations with offices in several countries.
Skill Set:
Manufacturing engineers must have a high level of critical thinking skill and extensive mathematical knowledge. Many also work with high tech equipment such as precision microscopes, CAD (computer aided drafting) software and digital calipers. Ability to draft a schematic and design blueprints, as well as present these designs to the heads of a company, are essential skills for an engineer in this field.
Education:
A bachelor's degree in engineering will almost certainly be required to begin a career as a manufacturing engineer. Many companies prefer higher degrees or related work experience in addition to education.
Training in other modern computerized engineering technology is essential; traditional print-and-paper schematics and drafting methods have long since been replaced by software and other digital methods. Engineers should have a good working knowledge of physics, geometry, algebra, calculus and trigonometry.
Career Path:
Education begins in a university or four-year college and will continue with related job experience after a degree is earned. Manufacturing engineers may begin their career in quality control, as engineer assistants or gain work experience in internships.
