Working at Sears in El Cajon, CA: 3 Employee Reviews

Sears Employee

"I worked for Sears for almost 3 years. The pace was very high, but the support was lacking in many places. Disorganization and miscommunication was common. There was no clear upward path. As it stands, once you are a technician, that's basically where you stay. On a more positive side, the freedom of the job was great."

"WORST JOB EVER. Keep looking, because it's not worth having a job that you hate at the pay that they give!"

What do you like about working at Sears?

"Sears gave me a lot of hours and a good employee discount. That's about all I can think of."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"There are 3 separate interviews, all asking the same questions. Show up promptly and you'll probably get the job. But if I were you, I wouldn't accept the offer."

What don't you like about working at Sears?

"1. The employees were all very negative and unhappy. On my first day alone I had THREE employees on the floor tell me to quit now because I'll hate it and the only reason why they have stayed is because they can't find another job. 2. Management is incompetent and largely absent. During my first week my manager (and supposed trainer) spoke to me only twice. The first time I saw her she showed me where my department was and then said she was going to lunch leaving no instruction. The second time she was walking by and HAPPENED to tell me that she had moved me to the women's department instead. 3. They WON'T train you. BUT they will expect you to know what to do. They made me sit through hours of online training that was really just describing corporate policy that didn't relate to the job, but when it came to what I was actually supposed to be doing on the floor, I got nothing! Like I said, my manager took me up to the floor my first day and said she was going to lunch leaving no instruction and NO go-to person on the floor to ask questions. She didn't check in again until four days later! And the other employees were no help in training because THEY had never been trained as well! And in addition, most of them had only been working a short time as well. 4. There is NO support system! If you have a problem with a customer, a question about an item or anything, 9/10 the managers won't even be available--granted, you will have to know how to reach your manager before you would be able to find out if they are available or not--something they DON'T train you how to do. 5. Pay is BELOW retail average."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Get COMPETENT managers that will be involved with employees and not just off on lunch all the time."
