Current CEO: Richard D. O’Dell
Saia Motor Freight is a Johns Creek, GA trucking company that provides regional, local and long haul services from close to 150 terminals throughout the United States. They were established in 1924 and have carved out a substantial niche in the Less Than Truckload (LTL) category of trucking companies. They are also known as a freight consolidator, since their trailers are frequently filled with the cargo of multiple shippers. Their fleet consists of over 3000 tractors and almost 11,000 trailers.
In 2010, the company generated almost $1 billion in revenue, along with producing a respectable growth rate of 6.3 percent compared to 2009, a time when many trucking companies were contracting rather than expanding. There are over 7000 employees, another number that grew in comparison to 2009, so they apparently are managing to compete with the two 500 pound gorillas of the LTL jungle, FedEx Freight and UPS Freight.
Working at Saia Motor Freight as a driver offers two main positions, that of Line and/or Team Driver and Local City Driver. The Line and Team Drivers will sometimes work weekends, but the company does offer two consecutive days off per week. Teams will average about 5000 miles per week and line haul drivers 2500.
Local City Drivers usually have M-F schedules. They will also assist with loading and unloading trailers at the terminal if needed. Qualifications for drivers include a minimum age of 21, 12 months of tractor-trailer experience, a safe, verifiable driving record and Class A CDL operator''s license with HAZMAT and Doubles endorsements. Loading dock supervisors, customer service representative, freight handlers and mechanics are a few of the other positions available.
Competitive pay, various health and dental plans, a prescription medication plan, life and short-term disability coverage, 401k plan and paid holidays, vacation and sick days are the Saia Motor Freight benefits offered.
The better-than-average compensation and solid benefits package indicates that the Saia Motor Freight culture is one that values its employees and realizes that they are the driving force to the company’s success. They also place a heavy emphasis on safety and have received numerous awards for having very low accident rates while in the process racking up nearly 100 million miles per year.
People who enjoy working outside and doing physical labor will enjoy Saia careers. Regional and long distance drivers experience limited idle time. Local drivers enjoy the ability to spend more time with families, making Saia a trucking company that can offer something for every type of truck driver.
