Production Managers oversee and direct day to day operations that result in delivering goods and services for which an organization is paid. They also play a key role in strategic planning and typically do not directly supervise workers but have either supervisors or lower level managers as direct reports.
Skill Sets: Production Managers generally possess strong organizational skills including the ability to provide effective coaching when necessary. A basic familiarity with all the major aspects of the business is necessary in order to manage the operation in a way that ensures the success of the business as a whole.
Education: While it is common for individuals without a college degree to advance to the point of becoming a Production Manager, this usually happens only after a number of years with the same company. For those desiring a faster track, a four year degree is essential with a master’s degree optimal.
Career Path: Experience in supervision will help to develop and apply both the technical and people skills necessary for success. A broad knowledge base, gained from working with those in other disciplines such as quality or engineering, will provide an advantage over others competing for the position. Pursuing opportunities for internships while in school will result in an important entry on a resume as well.
