Producers are responsible for every aspect of a movie, television show or live theater. They choose scripts, audition and hire cast and crew members, approve finances related to the production, oversee set design and keep a project on schedule and on budget.
Skillset: Excellent communication skills are necessary to give directions to everyone involved with the project. Producers must be creative in order to interpret a script and convey the message of the script. They must have leadership and management skills to supervise everyone on staff.
Education: In order to succeed as a producer, one should have a bachelor's degree that focuses on writing, journalism, acting, communication, arts management or business. A Master of Fine Arts (MFA) is necessary to advance in the production business.
Career Path: Before or during college, prospective producers should gain experience by assisting in theater productions, television studios or movie studios. Producers learn by starting at the bottom and working their way to the top of the profession. As producers gain experience, they will be assigned to more high profile projects.
