Principal engineers are responsible for supervising the operations and functions of major engineering and production branches within a company. They work closely with clients and company owners to ensure that a project is coming along in a timely manner and that projects meet the standards that are required. They also hire field engineers and work with accounting departments to make sure a project is remaining within a set budget.
Skillset: Many principal engineers have extensive backgrounds in drafting, electronics, maintenance and other similar technical skills. Solid writing abilities, assessment capabilities, computer software operation and strong organizational skills are just a few primary qualities that are desired in a principal engineer.
Education: Studies in computer science, industrial engineering and electrical engineering are suggested for anyone who wants to pursue a career as a principal engineer. Many times, a masters degree is required by hiring companies. Business administrative courses are desirable.
Career Path: Accounting abilities and superior technical and mathematical skills provide a solid foundation for a career as a principal engineer. Cost management classes, construction supervision courses and business administrative classes are suggested. Internships at an engineering consulting firm or a professional construction or computer manufacturing firm are also recommended.
