Northwest Airlines
Overview
Northwest Airlines was an airline in the United States that operated from 1926 to 2008, where it was absorbed by Delta Air Lines. After the acquisition, Northwest Airlines would continue to operate under its own name, until the integration process was complete in 2010. The company was headquartered in Eagan, Minnesota.
The company has a rich and interesting history. It was founded in 1926 by Colonel Lewis Brittin, at a time when aviation was still an emerging market and airplanes were rarely used for hauling passengers. The initial focus of the company, known back then as Northwest Airways was to rapidly fly mail around the country. The company started taking its first paying passengers in 1927. One year later, it opened its first international route, providing service to Winnipeg, Canada. In 1929, the emerging airline was acquired by a group of businessmen based in Minnesota.
