Nintendo
Overview
Nintendo is a Japanese electronics and game company with large branches in America and Europe. The company was founded in 1889 in Kyoto, Japan. Initially, Nintendo produced playing cards, and the company skipped from venture to venture before finding its true calling almost one hundred years later in the budding video game industry. In 1983, Nintendo released the Famicom, a home video game console that would dominate the market for the next seven years. The Famicom was released in North America in 1985 as the Nintendo Entertainment System and soon became a massive hit.
Nintendo is highly respected in its industry as a video game console designer and as a first-party game developer. Its innovative and exciting game series, the most successful and popular of which are Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and Metroid, helped Nintendo take control of the video game market in the 1980s and early 1990s. Nintendo now shares the market with Sony and Microsoft, but it has also discovered a new demographic of older gamers with its Wii and DS video game systems and their emphasis on family-based gaming.
