"I've worked for Nebraska Book Company at it's corporate Information Technology bldg for nearly 9 years now. I've had the pleasure to work with some very talented people, both on my team and in other departments and I've made many friends. That's the good part. The bad is there is very little communication internally between management and corporate, and moral just keeps getting worse. The bankruptcy and constant management and staff turnover, not to mention the endless department and management restructuring have brought moral to an all-time low. We all know our jobs aren't safe, and many are looking elsewhere while many others have already left. This last layoff of 60 good people is enough for me to advise you to not waste your time applying here. Bonuses are gone and so are the pay raises. The sad thing is when I first started with NBC, it was such a warm and family-oriented place to work. People were happy. Not anymore, and most are brushing up on their resumes and looking elsewhere."

"The summer hours are good. This place makes you look for another job because it is so abysmal."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Find somehwere else to work. This place is just horrible. I've ran many retail stores and this is the biggest Mickey Mouse organization I've ever seen."

What don't you like about working at Nebraska Book Co.?

"No training. No raises. No Support. They still use DOS as their main system. Everything is outdated and it is hard to provide customer service in 2012 with a system from the 1980s. You take complaints all of the time because you aren't able to fill customer needs because of the roadblocks the company puts up. The corporation is laughable as a whole. They won't even pay your store's utility bills on time. The accounting system is a huge waste of time and paper."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Test things out before you roll them out to the entire company. You need to get better POS and inventory systems in place. Stop looking at spreadsheets and look at actual stores. Stop cookie-cutting them. Dartmouth is not the same as OU. The buyers are a joke. It's embarrassing when you run out of notebooks the first day of classes."

"It's not incredibly difficult to be an average store manager or general manager, but to really achieve financial growth/success it requires a very intelligent leader who can learn quickly."

"Dying industry, no room for advancement, low salary, inconsistent schedule"

"Listen to top-performing managers, include top-performers in discussions regarding the future of the company"

"Put your egos down and listen when someone has a suggestion. I may be a good one. Just because you're a manager doesn't mean you're smarter."
