Communications Coordinator

"They talk the talk, but can't follow through with the walk."

What do you like about working at National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium?

"It is a prominent community organization that offers a unique and interesting environment."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Ask questions pertaining to compensation. Since this is a nonprofit organization, salaries may be less for a similar position in a for-profit company. However, where salary may lack, benefits (healthcare, vacation, sick time or PTO, growth and development opportunities, promotions, etc.) should not. Ask for a detailed summary of benefits before getting in too deep so you can compare their benefits package against what other organizations or companies are providing to see if they truly stack up or are even up to par. Also, be observant before, during and after the interview. Watch the behavior and physical cues of *all* employees you may encounter to get a better idea of the atmosphere and culture. Also, if given the opportunity, listen to what they're saying and the manner in which they are speaking."

What don't you like about working at National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium?

"Lack of leadership, structure and accountability from executive staff. Inappropriate compensation and skewed salary levels."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Engage more with employees to ensure their wants and needs are being met, or at the very least acknowledged and addressed. Ask if they have questions, and then provide them with answers. Reward them for a job well done, whether it be a public acknowledgment, appropriate compensation or additional benefits, like flex time or a free vacation day, opportunities to attend national conferences, professional development, etc. Also, a local organization that prides itself on the importance of community and taking care of its citizens; they would be prudent to take the interest of their employees in much higher regard than they currently do. It would behoove them to take care of those who take care of them every day."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

What don't you like about working at National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium?

"Too few people are expected to do the jobs of many. There is not enough staff to ensure any of our work is done completely, done correctly or done to the proper standards. There is little to no employee morale due to the lack of trust and appreciation from managers/directors; leadership fails to see the bigger picture on issues across the board."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Hire more people so all jobs are done correctly and fully, hold employees to the same expectation standards and create a more structured, professional work environment."
