Montgomery Ward Careers & Info

Montgomery Ward
Overview Montgomery Ward was an American department store that was founded in 1872 by Aaron Montgomery Ward. Beginning as a mail-order catalog business, Montgomery Wards grew over the years into one of the largest and most successful retail chains in the country. Montgomery Ward also had the highly popular "Wish Book," which carried all of the store's items.

Montgomery Ward enjoyed decades of success, however, the beginning of the company's demise can be traced back to the 1950s. After the forced resignation of the president, Sewell Avery, Ward's new board of directors opted to keep the operation in downtown areas instead of expanding to malls like their rivals; this turned out to be a fatal mistake. Montgomery Ward continued to lose ground throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In the end, not only could they not compete with Sears, JCPenney, and Dillard's, Kmart and Walmart were cutting into their profits.
