Overview Montana State University (also called MSU) is a public university that is based in Bozeman, Montana. The university first opened its doors in 1893 and was called the Agricultural College of the State of Montana. In recognition of the institution's growth as well as the quality of its undergraduate and graduate programs, the Montana State Assembly chose to recognize it as a full university in 1965. MSU currently has the largest campus in the state of Montana and had 14,153 students enrolled as of 2011.

MSU offers numerous academic programs to meet the needs of its students. It is the only institution of higher learning in the world to offer a Master of Fine Arts in Science and Natural History Film Making degree. MSU confers associate, bachelor, master and doctoral degrees in agriculture, arts, business, education, engineering, nursing, science and other fields of study.
