Mississippi State University is one of the nation's finest public universities. The main campus is situated on 4,200 rural acres in Starkville, Mississippi. There are also campuses in Vicksburg, Meridian and Biloxi. The university is commonly referred to as MSU. The school was founded in 1878 and was originally called the Agricultural and Mechanical College of the State of Mississippi. Its primary mission was to provide training in horticulture, agriculture and mechanical arts.

Today, MSU has grown considerably. The school enrolls approximately 20,000 students and is the largest university in the state. Academically recognized programs at MSU include veterinary science and engineering. The university is a land-grant institution. Forbes Magazine has ranked MSU as one of America's Best College Buys.
