Medical receptionists are in charge of the flow of a medical office. They set appointments, check in patients, organize paperwork, manage office inventory and use office software. They sometimes assist with medical billing.


Skill Sets: Knowledge of office software, email and office business machinery is key. Good customer service skills are important as they will interact with patients and vendors frequently. Medical receptionists should have a good grasp of medical terminology. They may be required to use a multiple line phone system. Candidates should possess a concrete sense of confidentiality.


Education: A high school diploma or the equivalent is required. Completing courses in medical terminology, business administration and office software would be helpful.


Career Path: Medical receptionists are in high demand. This position is entry level, but employees have the opportunity to move up to medical assistant with additional schooling. Gaining office experience and knowledge of medical terminology are good ways to build a resume.
