In 1967, Douglas merged with McDonnell Aircraft, which had a long history of producing aircraft for military forces of the U.S. and other countries, including the legendary F-4 Phantom II jet fighter. McDonnell Douglas became a major manufacturer of rotary wing aircraft for civilian and military operators when it acquired the Hughes Helicopter division in 1984.

In 1997, McDonnell Douglas became one of the world's largest manufacturers of commercial aircraft when it merged with formal rival Boeing, known for such famous aircraft as the 727, the jumbo 747 and the new 787 Dreamliner. A lesser known aspect of McDonnell Douglas is its production of computer systems, including Spirit and Reality OS.
