A materials manager oversees inventory within a facility. This person’s primary objective is to make sure the proper level of inventory is maintained at all times. The materials manager is responsible for ensuring the correct inventory is on hand and in the correct quantities for production to maintain its schedule. The materials manager is also responsible for limiting the amount of over aged and obsolete inventory in stock.
Skillset: Materials managers often have strong mathematical skills which are needed to analyze and evaluate inventory levels and scenarios. Materials managers often have direct reports from many functions, including buyers, material handlers, and warehouse personnel. Materials managers have good managerial and communication skills in order to effectively manage these different aspects of inventory control.
Education: Many materials managers have a master’s degree in a related field. A bachelor’s degree or above is expected in qualified candidates. Common degree concentrations include business, supply chain, and mathematics. Many companies also require APICS certification with a concentration in inventory management.
Career Path: The materials manager position is not an entry level position in most companies. Previous experience in inventory control and management is necessary. Although internships can improve a potential candidate’s resume, relevant job experience is often required.
