A maintenance mechanic, also known as a journeyman mechanic, is primarily in charge of setting up machines, emergency repair and performing scheduled maintenance. In essence, they are responsible for the operation of large production machines. They are employed by factories.


Skill Sets: Maintenance mechanics should be good team players and also able to work independently. They should be mechanically inclined. Good communication skills are important as the mechanic will work with employees above and below him or her in rank. Expertise in math is helpful.


Education: An associates degree in industrial maintenance is required. High school courses in mechanical drawing, electronics, computer programming and mathematics are desirable. Many colleges offering an associated in industrial maintenance require applicants to pass a mechanical aptitude test.


Career Path: Earn high school credits in mechanical drawing, math, electronics and computer programming. Achieve an associates degree in industrial machines. Often, companies hire candidates as assistant maintenance mechanics and later promote them.
