Loan officers work on behalf of a bank or lending institution. They review loan applications and often make decisions on whether individuals qualify for a new loan. They might hold meetings with both bank management and potential borrowers to determine the terms of a potential loan.
Skillset: Loan officers will usually have strong communication skills. They should be able to effectively communicate with management-level bank officers and with clients. They must have a working knowledge of finance, including all of the relevant aspects of lending. Strong organizational skills are a must for people in this position.
Education: Loan officers can earn their jobs with a number of different backgrounds. They might study finance, accounting or even economics. They might study communications. Some come to this field after studying liberal arts.
Career Path: A loan officer might work his way through the bank hierarchy. He might begin working as a teller at a bank or he might be an account executive. People with the right educational background have the ability to land these jobs right out of school. With an MBA, a former loan officer might have the ability to climb in the ranks at his or her bank, landing in a management position in some instances.
