Graphic designers create visuals by hand and through the use of computer software in order to creatively convey a message, advertise a product or help educate consumers. Some may choose to specialize in a certain area, like creating movie posters or designing the credits seen in motion pictures.
Skillset: Designers should be able to quickly create rough sketches and ideas to show to clients in addition to being able to adequately convey those ideas to the client. Creativity and being able to juggle multiple projects as well as working on a team are other good qualities for graphic designers to have.
Education: A bachelor's degrees in graphic design is usually required for jobs as a graphic designer. Some programs may request that applicants submit samples of their work before they are admitted. Individuals who are in high school and are considering becoming graphic designers may want to consider taking design and art courses.
Career Path: While enrolled in a university or college, future graphic designers may have the opportunity to start building their professional portfolio to show to potential employers. Before being allowed to move up to a higher position, a graphic designer may need anywhere from one to three years of work experience.
