Skillset: Facility managers must be able to analyze an organization and improve efficiency. Communication skills are important since facility managers constantly speak with employees. Attention to detail is a necessity to manage a variety of tasks at one time. Leadership skills are necessary to coordinate responsibilities and motivate employees.
Education: A high school diploma is all that is necessary at a small company. Larger companies may expect a facility manager to have a bachelor's degree in business, facility management or engineering. Frequently, work experience is a requirement.
Career Path: It is easier to advance in a large organization as it will have various levels of management and several departments. Individuals with master's degrees could become director of administrative services. Others may become independent consultants.
